Conrail Elkhart, IN Yard -- 1978
Author: MartyBernard

Currently Norfolk Southern, was New York Central.

It looks like Duane Hall used a telephoto lens for all these from the Hump Tower shown in the Google Map (Picture 1) with a Yellow Arrow.

Nothing is written on the slides so corrections and comments are welcome, as always.

1. Google Map today
  •    Yellow Arrow = Hump Tower
  •    Green Arrow = Retarder
  •    Red Arrow = Diesels and Shops
  •   The Classification Yard (bowl) is left.
  •   A stringe of cars (arrived train) is being pushed up the Hump from the right.

2 and 3.  Looking west down the Retarder and at the Classification yard from the Hump Tower.  In picture 3 cars are rolling into the Yard at the lower end of the Retarder.

7. Looks like car scale with the operator's office has been removed.  Looks like the scale weighed one axle at a time???  [EDIT]  boxcar1954 wrote, "I think that is a short length of retarder used to assist getting pins at the crest, etc probably controlled by hump conductor."

Thanks Duane,
Marty Bernard

I think that is a short length of retarder used to assist getting pins at the crest, etc probably controlled by hump conductor.
Great 'semi-vintage' photos of the yard and area, thanks for posting. Bowl looks pretty well represented.
