------------------------------------------------------- > What makes it a GP9E? I believe the "E" designates that the engine has gone through the GRIP program which stands for General Rehabilitaion and Improvement Program. I think it also has something to do with the SP Equipment Company that leases it back to the railroad but I'm not an expert on this. I'm sure sombody on here can give you better information than I can. steamjocky Date: 10/21/05 12:28 Re: Espee's GP9Es Author: Steamjocky The GP9s were probably my favorite locomotive. In fact, I considered the name of "Mr. GP9" to use on this site. Maybe I should have.
I started my career on GP9s at Colton in 1969 and made my first trip as an engineer on the 3732 in 1972. Thanks Tony. You've again put a big smile on my face. steamjocky Date: 10/21/05 20:41 Re: Espee's GP9Es Author: TonyJ millerdc Wrote:
------------------------------------------------------- > What makes it a GP9E? I think someone else pretty well answered it. A GP9E WAS A GP9 rebuilt by SP under GRIP 1 from 1970 to 1976 and recapitalized by SP by selling the units to Southern Pacific Equipment Co., which then leased the units back to SP. These units were designated by an E suffix to their model designation. Tony |
