Nostalgia & History > SP GE Dash-8's dinged nosesDate: 12/08/05 17:29 SP GE Dash-8's dinged noses Author: photobob SP Dash-8's were not the most popular of SP's units to roll through the Dunsmuir area however most of the shots I have of these units have dented nose's. I have very few shots of EMD units with any nose dents. Why would this be? The first shot shows a small dent on 8023 on a westbound at Sims.

I know of some Espee hogg's that didn't like these guys on mountain grades for obvious four axle slippage reasons. But they were my favorite GE's (still are today even in yellow) and sure did sound neat under load or at idle!
four words: thin cheap sheet metal Yup, all of the dash-8 class seem to have suffered from this dented nose phenomenon from their delivery in the late 80's on through the present day. I just like how that SP scarlet still manages to shine even with the B39-8E nose dents! -Ryan aka "espee_b-boat_boy" on the ex-WP Oakland Sub MP11.2 photobob Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > SP Dash-8's were not the most popular of SP's > units to roll through the Dunsmuir area however > most of the shots I have of these units have > dented nose's. Maybe if they were sanded too quickly with plugged or no venting, they might have collapsed under vaccum? just a thought.
