MKT freight and the InterAmerican near Houston -- Dec
Author: gcm

GP38-2 #308 at Whit siding west of Houston is eastbound as the Houston section of the InterAmerican is being rerouted on the MKT to Temple about 15 miles west of Houston. I believe the Katy only had a couple of B units at this time.
This section of the MKT (Houston-Katy) was taken out over 10 years ago.
Ongoing I-10 expansion, subdivisions, shopping centers have made this spot unrecognizable today.

Was there a siding in the Houston area called Temple, because the town of Temple is about 220 miles from Houston?

The detour was probably to Sealy, where the MKT crossed the ATSF main to Temple.

Very nice gcm. Amazing how something so ordinary in 1979 now looks so exotic. Thanks for posting.

Other Amtrak detours on the MKT did return to the Santa Fe at Sealy but I believe this one went all the way to Temple on the Katy.

This section of track was taken out of service on 10/15/1997 and torn up soon after to make room for I-10 expansion.
