Looks like the special run with specially painted 4-6-0 SP2248. I cabn't pinpoint the exact location, but I'd say it's somewhere around Belmont. - Tony J.

Tony,
Your on the right line and yes it was a special, but for what? Anyone know?
I knew when I saw your post below you'd probably know Tony!
The location is almost impossible to figure out.
Summer 1957... If my Dad is right.

Me thinks they went on a sidetrip to my old hometown, Los Altos.

This may have been the special to honor retiring Louis Chess. It did operate via the Los Altos Branch on a Sunday. Our family watched it go by from our front lawn near the station of Loyola where we lived.

Cool stuff there Dave. Here's Linden Ave with the 2472 Zephyr from 2002.

If anyone possesses photos of the Louis Chess train in Los Gatos, we could use a few for our "Images of Rail" project. I hear there was even a derailment on Billy Jones' railroad that day. Royalties bring money to good local (steam and history) causes!

BTW, one of the Sunday River Production programs on SP steam shows this steamer in action, believe in SF on display and on the move around San Bruno.

If "fjc" is referring to Sunday River's video, "GS 4/6 As It Used To Be," then the sequence showing SP No. 2248 on an excursion train was shot at these three Southern California locations: near Sylmar, the south end of Saugus siding and about four miles east of Piru on the Santa Paula branch. Unfortunately, the narration ridiculously stated the train was going through Niles Canyon (the excusion was called "Farewell to Age of Steam" and also "The Hansen Special" and ran on June 8, 1958).
