UP E's Smokin' over Sherman Hill, WY. (4-71)

A flagrant Vestibule Violation, to be sure, but with Amtrak looming on the horizon less than a month away, what was this 16 year old to do? This is from UP's #103 "City of Everywhere" Cheers, Steve -- PS- IACN!

We all did it. This is east of Portland. Just wasn't enough curve to get the head end.

Ed, I miss the days of holding my head out the vestibule with the wind in my hair and keeping my lips tightly closed...the young-uns out there probably don't know that when you flushed the toilet, well, lets just not go there!- Steve

How many cars was the train then? What was in all the baggage cars?

Mail, express, mail, and more mail. Here is the Shasta Daylight. Even I forgot how many baggage cars were normally carried.

That's not the Shasta Daylight. That's the Klamath. Discontinued in 1965.

Todd- I looked at facing forward and rearward slides from riding UP #103 that day and counted 20 total cars, counting 3 domes! Here's a rear facing shot (assuming I wasn't playing hide and seek with the conductor and changed positions)as we headed over Sherman Hill. What a thrill to be 16 and alone and riding passenger trains long distance the first time in my life! And knowing I would probably never ride RR owned passenger trains again...Steve

Rear four cars are the City of Portland off at Green River. Next are the two City of SF sleepers, one a SP Budd 10/6. After that is the City of LA sleeper ( one.. odd), the diner and dome lounge ( for the City of LA) and the coaches. The rear three will probably go onto LA and the forward two for the City of SF. A couple of those baggage cars will go onto the City of SF too. Being this is an off season consist, the SP will add a coffee-shop diner, Ogden coach and dorm and baggage.
