Well, kinda sorta. #2576 was pulling an excursion train around the Tracy wye. This was the excursion operated over Altamont then back up the Mococco thru Byron to Oakland.

If am not mistaken, that was the first excursion operated by Amtrak around here. I have more shots of it but as usual I have no idea where the (insert word of your choice)they are.

Actually, there were a couple prior trips in 1972, one from Sacramento to Reno in April. It had something to do with the V&T under construction. The other was the April Rio Vista Limited from San Jose to Sacramento and Susiun-Fairfield to San Jose.

Cool! My Dad and I rode this train, and I was only 10 at the time. We went down to 16th Street station that morning just to see it off, and they had a couple of extra seats. Dad made a spur of the moment decision and we were off on a memorable trip! I believe it had 5 F-units for power. I remember he put up an impressive cloud of smoke going under Hiway 17 as he throttled up out of Jack London Square.

I'd love to see more pictures of this excursion if you have them.

Thanks.

Someone has posted a shot of the train going past the Pleasanton depot with Amtrak F's on it. I would love to see more photos from that run too...

Yep. Those are most of them. Wasn't there one posted taken in Niles Canyon?

Related to MDO's women engineers post, Evelyn Newhall was working the coach yard switcher that morning and brought the train into the depot.
