I guess the radio communication failed and then they derailed half the train. After that, the Locotrol experiment was cancelled over the Tehachapis. I can remember that when I was visiting New Mexico I used to see a joint SP/ATSF Coal train that went through Belen, NM with a Santa Fe SF30C and two SP Tunnel Motors and then in the middle of the train they had another SF30C and two more SP Tunnel Motors.
