The SP 6017 was a very classy locomotive. Would like to have seen her in person. More photos are in the book "Southern Pacific Historic Diesels" Vol. 3, pages 9 & 10. She went through several appearance changes. This early one somehow reminds me of an early 1950s Buick...

something is wrong. they're wondering why EMD made that nose ahead of the cab so long! Sure, a nice front view was a step up from the normal steam cab viewpoint. But the first E-units were a definite step back from what the SP hoggs had been spoiled with in their fancy-schmancy cab-forwards...

May be a typpo, but it was a model E2 (then rebuilt to E7 specs.)

That unit was known as the "Queen Mary" (AKA Madame Queen). It was later rebuilt as an E7.
