CNW grab-shot
Author: MacBeau

Changing locations in Marshalltown, Iowa back in ’90 forced this “grab-shot” of an eastbound just before a deluge brought the railroad to a halt while track inspectors investigated reports from crews of water over the tracks. Sixteen years later, this lash-up reveals an interesting trio. That SD40–2 out front was scheduled to become UP 2990 but managed to allude the patch goblin until May 2003, and based on photographic evidence was still in CNW paint as late as September 2005 (may still be). The 4547 came to the CNW new in November 1957 as the 1749. After leaving the CNW (date unknown) it went to the Panhandle Northern, then the Central Kansas Railway, next to Tradewater Railway, and finally to Railway Switching Services (always as the 4547). As of Reed’s 3rd Ed., it was working at Texas Eastman in Longview. The second GP9, 4545 became Cedar Rapids & Iowa City 105.

I hired out on CNW in 1971, and GP9 1749 was the first CNW locomotive I ever boarded.

Thanks!
