Mount Hood in its GP9 Days
Author: samreeves

Here's a view of my one ride on the Mount Hood Railroad in Oregon. Day-glo GP9 #88 rests at Parkdale, Oregon in August of 1992. I wish I could return up there, but at $3 a gallon with the U.S.S. Explorer it won't happen anytime soon!

That is one ugly paint scheme.

$3 a gallon? Where are you getting it that cheap?

He he…I meant $3 dollars in vague terms. The best we can do on the Monterey Peninsula is $3.19 currently.

Sam, she's still there. Shot this in May, this year, at Hood River. It was a weekday and they weren't running.

Those of us in these parts call it the "Easter egg."

88 (ex-SP, originally low-nose GP-9) is still working the railroad along with newer arrival GP38-2 "02", nearly the same paint scheme but a different shade of blue and the word "Railroad" appearing on the side of the long hood.

89 appears to be out of service and on a side track, probably being parted out to keep the 88 alive. Not much reason for a large roster of power - given little freight traffic (sometimes hauled behind a passenger run) and just one train out at a time (using only one locomotive). Just enough horsepower to make it up the hill.

I believe that the red color was called "strawberry fraye" (I probably didn't spell it right, I don't know & don't care). MHRR does some neat things, and at least the HW cars are painted dark green. Anyone w/ pics of the lease unit ex-NP #560 on MHRR?
