I've been meaning to ask this... Is that home built cantilever crossing signal still there?

So was there some odd masking tape shortage in the late 60's?

I assume you are referring to the silver overspray. That seems to be very common on ATSF warbonnet power at that thime. Even the FP45 that brought the last Chief into Richmond had that same overspray.

Looks like the coupler has picked up a little overspray over the years too. Wonder if the FRA would allow that now (or did then)?

The Santa Fe, and I would suppose other RR's, would give a quick touch-up the pilots, sills and running gear of passenger engines as part of the turn-around process to keep them looking good for the corporate image. That actually isn't too bad compared to some I've seen.

Great pic, and the city of Stockton sure did take good care of that passenger station

I believe so, but it's been modified in the last few years with better railings and ladders.

I believe that the crossing flasher in the photo was a fairly recent addition. Santa Fe had a crossing watchman stationed at the crossing (shanty was in the southeast quadrant) into the late '60s.
