Santa Barbara and Hiland meets
Author: choochoocharlie

Three more train meet photos.

1 - Caboose on a Westbound led by U33C 8600 meets the empty beet gons of an Eastbound led by another U33C #8728 with SD45's 8982 and 8824. This is looking West from the top of an autorack setout on the switching lead due to need of repairs just east of Santa Barbara Street.
2 - SP cabs #1325 on an Eastbound and 1271 on a Westbound, which will cut out it's 3 unit GP9 helper set once the East train is further down the hill.
3 - UP caboose #25533 on the end of an East train of about 100 cars led by SP SD40 8448 with 8821 and 9036. Amtrak Coast Starlight #13 just arrived at the Santa Barbara station with an 11 car train. Amtrak SDP40F's #567 and 571 are on the point this day. A crew change is in progress for #13 and the crewman on the caboose is getting ready to grab his orders from the train order post in front of the station.

I checked my timebook for May of 1970 to see if I could have been on that helper at Hiland. The only 3-unit entry I have for that time period was for May 23 when I had the 3676, 3524, and the 3682 and we helped the extra 5306 West up to Hiland and came back to Colton lite engine. But alas, I had gone to work at 630pm that night and went off duty at 250am so that could not have been me on that helper.

Steamjockey, one of these days I will actually post a photo of a train that you were on. Or at least I hope to do that................. C.C.Chas.

I wouldn't be surprised if that did happen. Over the years I have been photographed many times on Beaumont and Tehachapi. In March of 2005 (or was it 2004?) when the UP ran an Engineering Department Special, I was the engineer on it from Lathrop to Bakersfield. That was probably the last time that I know of when I had my photo taken that was posted on TO.

Keep going C.C. It's bound to happen sooner or later.
