Vacation July 1977 Part 3
Author: SP6190

The next morning we headed south from Temple for a day on the Santa Fe. Our first stop was at Rogers where we caught the south bound sulfur train with the 5609 leading another SD45 and a SD26 on the point, and near the end of the train were the remotes, which consisted of a GP38-RCU-U36C.

Not far behind the sulfur train was the 2862 will meet the 2477 here at Rogers. The 2477 was a north bound light engine with just about everything but the kitchen sink on it.

Nearing Caldwell we heard a SP train talking on the radio so we decided to wait for a little while to see what came along. This is the SP so we didn’t know what would we would see. What came along was the BN5824 heading west on a coal train with remotes. At least it had a SP caboose bringing up the rear.

Farther south we heard a train leaving Somerville so we decided to find a spot and wait for it. It wasn’t long before the 2702 came along heading north with a merchandise train. It had the somewhat standard four first generation units for power with the 999393 bringing up the rear. This train was going to meet the 2862 at the next siding so we decided to wait and get another shot it.

Not much at Somerville other than the local switcher power with the 2666 and a CF7, so we headed back north. At Caldwell again, we caught the north bound Amtrak Lone Star with the 524 on the point. We found out nothing was coming on the SP so we continued north back to Temple hoping to catch a south bound along the way, but that was not to happen. Checking out Temple, we found several B-units which were not going anywhere soon. This cast of characters included the SF 288B, 352A, 356A, 357A, and 284A. Tomorrow, Cleburne.

Very interesting stuff! Looks like they used the CF7s just like A units. Looks like ATSF also recycled a lot of the old Wabco single note horns and applied them on of course the CFs but also some newer Geeps.
