Nostalgia & History > September '69 SP trip Part 10Date: 09/11/06 07:23 September '69 SP trip Part 10 Author: drew1946 Continuing South and passing thru the town of Delano. Again is,this depot still there? Note the old REA truck of, what I believe, is of post office ancestry. Delano itself was in the news constantly as the Chevez movement was extremely active there.
Next to the depot, SP heavyweight car #112 lettered "Instruction Car", does it still exist. Then arrival at Bakersfield. Date: 09/11/06 07:27 Re: September '69 SP trip Part 10 Author: drew1946 SP 3207 getting a clean winshield and a new crew at Bakersfield
Passing ATSF #1836 somewhere above Caliente Then another freight led by ATSF F45 1939 at Woodford Date: 09/11/06 07:31 Re: September '69 SP trip Part 10 Author: drew1946 #52 entering the tunnel at Walong and the climbing around the curve to the upper level of the loop then at the end of the Walong siding.

SP created them from some old sleepers as I recall Date: 09/12/06 19:39 Re: September '69 SP trip Part 10 Author: JohnSweetser The Delano depot supposedly succumbed to fire in the summer of 1982. It probably had been vacant since the start of Amtrak in 1971.
Date: 09/12/06 22:56 Re: September '69 SP trip Part 10 Author: JohnSweetser The Delano depot burned down on July 16, 1982, to be exact. The Delano Record stated that the cause was believed to have been "children playing with fire."
It's possible the depot stayed open as a freight agency for a few years after the San Joaquin Daylight was discontinued with the start of Amtrak in 1971. Date: 09/13/06 09:51 Re: September '69 SP trip Part 10 Author: SanJoaquinEngr taken at Rowen siding
