I am wondering what their engines sounded like.
Date: 09/21/06 17:22 Re: Does Anybody Remember The Krauss-Maffei Locomotives Author: SanJoaquinEngr the only engine I was in was the SP Camera Car SP 8799 that was used to film the right of way for the simulator. I used to talk to the old heads about these units that they had run over Tehachapi.. they all said the engines were ok on the flat land but on the grades the transmissions would overheat.. thus causing road failure...

One day in early '67, there were a pair of the KM's with consecutive road numbers along with a pair of covered wagons sitting on a spur waiting for a call to help a Westbound to Bakersfield. I eventually did witness this. Boy what a spectacle leaving town!
Last one I saw active was in May of '68 in Bakersfield. Tom Date: 09/21/06 18:33 Re: Does Anybody Remember The Krauss-Maffei Locomotives Author: TCnR What did they sound like?
Ph-Bob has a number of K-M photos on his website, said they had a whistling kinda noise but he also said they always smelled like german sausages as the Technical Support Engineers from K-M traveled with them for a while, not sure which part of that to believe. The SPH&TS had an article on them in the past year, or so. They did spend a lot of time motoring up and down the valley. IIRC, they were really pretty good for that and not much else on the ESPEE. Wonder what they would have done on the plains.

There sound was quite and fast running for a diesel engine. Back in the days when railranning was great something different to see and film.
Ryan Ballard Date: 09/22/06 17:28 Re: Does Anybody Remember The Krauss-Maffei Locomotives Author: latl1450 I was told that as far as being used in the mountain areas they were a total flop. I remember one old head calling them "Hitler's late day revenge." Bud
