Nostalgia & History > a question for anyone familiar with OregonDate: 11/06/06 11:48 a question for anyone familiar with Oregon Author: xtra1188w I took these pictures from a vestibule on Amtrak's Coast Starlight, northbound back in 1976, but I've since forgotten where these were taken other than it was in Oregon. Do any of these locations look familiar to anybody?
Con Date: 11/06/06 11:50 Re: a question for anyone familiar with Oregon Author: Railbaron The top 2 photos are definitely downtown Eugene, Oregon, at the depot (the building would be behind you).
The last photo I am 99.9% certain is at Colfax, California, which you would have been on the San Francisco Zephyr (Amtrak trains 5 & 6) and not the Starlight. The roundhouse is to the right, just out of the picture. The second photo was taken just west of the SP depot at Eugene.

Shouldn't there be a steam line connected to the car for heat as well? Butch,,,here we go Date: 11/06/06 23:18 Re: a question for anyone familiar with Oregon Author: choochoocharlie Sorry Con, saw these a bit late tonight. But your questions have already been answered correctly from what I see and read. I don't know the location of that third photo in the first batch. All the others are definitely in Eugene down by the depot and going by the SP yard and shops................. C.C.Chas. (Just thought I'ld throw my 2 cents worth into the discussion.)

This is a good thought but only stations that had regular layover equipment had yard steam and then only in the heyday of the passenger train. I don't see the piping out there anyway. I think the SP business cars were self contained. You can see the propane bunkers and what appears to be a Waukesha unit under the car. Bob |
