ATSF in Franklin Canyon
Author: qnyla

Watching the ATSF in Franklin Canyon was always interesting.

Here ATSF C30-7 8166 leads the hot 199 westbound in Franklin Canyon at Glen Frazier, CA on June 14, 1986.

I assume this area is nothing but houses and asphalt now.

Nice. Santa Fe's last C30-7, and the last new 6-axle unit they would buy for nearly a decade.

Not really. The siding and auxiliary tracks went away in the late 90's, and the cantilever gave way to a mast-mounted searchlight around 2003, but that corner of Franklin Canyon hasn't seen much in the way of new development.

The one with the 8166 shows remarkable clarity. Looks almost like a very well done model.

That scene has a new freeway overpass for a now 4-lane Highway 4 running through it.
