Interesting that a steam generator equipped SD-7 along with a similarly equipped pair of GP-9B locomotives were in California. One would think that these would be in the midwest wehere there might still have been some local passenger service that needed the steam units. Could the steam generator equiped units like this have been teamed with the turbines to supply steam heat to heat the turbine fuel?

Not in California in 1966, when all these photos were taken. UP's turbines were last used in California in 1962.

Don't forget the great airline strike during the summer of 1966. Maybe the steam generator-equipped SD7 and GP9Bs were used on the UP's mail train to Southern California, which sometimes ran in multiple sections then.

Actually the SD7 and GP9 B’s were around for about a week and never moved from the shop tracks (at least while we were around). Don’t know what they were here for, but after about a week they disappeared and were never seen again, or at least the SD7 wasn’t.

I'm a steam guy, but these are great and I really appreciate 'em. Thanks a lot!

Love that LAUPT shot with a Santa Fe and UP units "kissing" at the throat tracks leading to LAUPT!

I always thought that the SD-7's were assigned to Nebraska??? One of the few classes of UP power that actually stayed in one place.

The largest group was assigned to SLC. Another group worked North Platte, mostly as hump power. Two more alternated on the Coalmont Branch. They also tried two with slugs at East LA for a while.
