Amtrak Steam Heat/HEP Renumbering?
Author: prr4828

Hi all

T'was wondering if someone in the TO community might have or know where to find a cross reference to renumberings applied to Amtrak's Heritage fleet when it was converted to HEP.

I would appreciate if someone could refresh my memory ... about what year(s) did this program start, and how long did it take to complete? Would I be correct in thinking some cars were dropped from the roster instead?

Thank you!

Amtrak initiated the program to convert steam/DC genemotor cars to HEP in about 1976 or 1977 with a pair of 10&6 sleepers converted to HEP to operate with Amfleet I cars on the Night Owl between Washington and Boston. All of the steam/DC/genemotor cars were off the active roster by March 1980 or March 1981 when the last steam/DC consist ran on The Silver Star. The majority of the cars retained and converted to HEP were Budd stainless steel cars.

Most of the cars that were not converted to HEP were eventually sold to new owners thru a series of auctions between the early 1980s and mid/late 1990s.

Some additional cars (such as some dome cars and 11 double bedroom sleepers) that had been placed in storage were pulled out of storage and converted to HEP later in the 1980s for service on Amtrak's Autotrain and other pre-Superliner consists such as the Capitol Limited and City of New Orleans.

The series of Amtrak Car Spotter books edited by Robert Wayner and published by Wayner Publications of New York are the best reference to the before-conversion and after-conversion car numberings. These books are long out of print, but usually available from after-market sources online or at railroadiana shows.

This initial fleet eventually numbered 100 baggage, sleeping and dorm cars. These cars were used on LD trains otherwise composed of HEP Amfleet coaches and lounges. The original Pioneer, Desert Wind and the National Limited were among trains using these cars.

The Heritage Fleet HEP rebuilding program started about 1979 and ran thru about 1985. The Heritage Fleet cars were distinctively different from the original HEP conversions in that the original cars were not completely refurbished. Most of the earlier HEP rebuilds were later given the full HF treatment.

Santa Fe's Topeka Shops also did HF rebuilds on most of the Hi-Level cars 1979-1981.

True. I believe the Florida trains were steam heat thru 1982. They were the last trains to be converted to HEP and powered solely by SDP40Fs.

Or left to rot!

Yes and these cars were in the shop when I toured Beech Grove in 1983. I think the last cars to be converted to HEP were the six Santa Fe Hi-Level diners which came out around 1985.

Jack has it nailed. My copy is Amtrak Car and Locomotive Spotter, 4th Ed, Wayner Publications, 1980. Also useful are several books by RPC Publications, W. David Randall. The best Randall series for your needs were the Railway Passenger Car Annuals. These volumes give the complete car number history.

Yup. Good luck. If you want detail on any particular car or series, let me know.

Amtrak Heritage Fleet Car Information

JB

Here's some info from my notes; I have more detail info on renumbering but its too detailed to post - if you are looking for a specific car or groups, please contact me by e-mail.

Also, not all the passenger cars in the final group of 258 of mostly Budd Cars, that Amtrak set aside for head end conversion were given new number series, for example several Dome Sleepers, Dome Coaches and Dome Lounges never had new series identified.
