Nostalgia & History > New Jersey Transit in the early 80's - Part 1Date: 02/28/07 18:12 New Jersey Transit in the early 80's - Part 1 Author: PasadenaSub For about a year in the early 80's, I participated in a slide trade with Carl Perelman from New Jersey. I sent him extra roster shots I took of SP, Santa Fe, UP, Amtrak, (as well as a few Western Pacific) locomotives from here in California. In exchange I received slides from nearly every major railroad in the northeast as well as many shortlines, industrials, and commuter lines.
Carl is now the news editor for Railpace magazine, and I hope he doesn't mind me posting a few of the photos here. Here is the first part of a sampling of New Jersey Transit power from around '83-'84. 1) F7a 423 at Elizabethport, NJ 2) E8A 4326 at Peekskill, NY (presumably under lease to Metro-North?). Note the New Haven lettered car behind the unit. 3) E8A 4285 at South Amboy, NJ in a very handsome scheme, reminiscent of the striping pattern used on ACL/RF&P/FEC E-units. Date: 02/28/07 18:23 Re: New Jersey Transit in the early 80's - Part 1 Author: PasadenaSub 4) E8a 4333 still in Southern paint, at Elizabethport, NJ. Did this unit ever get repainted before retirement, or only used for parts?
5) E8a 4326 with a mate at South Amboy, NJ. How long did the covered wagons (both E's and F's) last on the NJT? 6) F40PH-2 4124 at Elizabethport, NJ. Date: 02/28/07 18:33 Re: New Jersey Transit in the early 80's - Part 1 Author: PasadenaSub 7) GP40P's 4112 & 4104 (ex-CNJ) at South Amboy, NJ.
8) E60CH 958 at S. Amboy 9) RDC-1 557 (ex-CNJ) at Elizabethport, NJ. I'll post the second half of the group before too long. The shot of the handsome E8a has a certain CNJ feel to it as well

The E's were gone, I think by 85 and the F's lasted longer until 87 or 88. I remember seeing F unit led consists going through Little Falls, NJ on a daily basis back in the late 80's. The F unit would usually pull about 3 or 4 cars. And they sounded GREAT!
