It is interesting that the 2906 is the only unit to sport a new "1965" number. There were not many black widow RS-11s renumbered, as I recall.

Cool photos! And note that the 2906 still has 5701 in the numberboard.

Correction thanks to TCS: I should have typed 5721. My error.

And to SP6190, who I appreciate sharing so much here, I guess it is 5726. If I had access to my rosters, I'd have verified it, but I took a quick look and got it wrong for the second time.

The point I was trying to make is that this must have been a very recent repaint, as the numberboards weren't changed to correspond with the locomotive renumbering. I'm not sure I ever saw that happen on any other unit. Even up in Oregon when the Baldwin S12s were renumbered, SP usually just painted over the little lighted number panel on the side.

Looks more like 5721 from here but that's cool.

Neither of which would be it's original number which was 5726. Oh well.

What kind of engine is that 5866?

This would be an Alco RS-11 or DL701.

More neat stuff!

I had no idea those little Alcos worked in the desert.

In the early 60s they were used as local power on the Pennisula and to power the Monterey and Santa Cruz locals, but I thought from there they went to LA and
the T&NO.

Actually on the SP east lines at that time, you could find anything in the number boards. They didn't seem to care what was showing, except on the passenger trains.

Pretty common as yard and local power at Indio during the mid-Sixties after they were bumped off the mainline. They trickled-down to the LA switcher pool.

And we won't have to worry about it rolling away.

Notice the brake cylinder piston is extended on the #2 axle and the hand brake chain is tight? That means someone forgot to release it. Oh, well. The shoes will burn off... eventually.

The guy standing next to the 5866 looks kinda like John Keefer.

Boy, does this photo bring back memories as a kid!

I noticed the handbrake too. Some things never change, do they?

Think he ran over the blocking chains, too?

I wouldn't doubt it a bit.
