And Daytime at LAUPT May 6, 1989. The SP 6051, UP 951, and Santa Fe 347C do their thing.

Wow, it must have taken some politicking to get the units together on one place.

Thanks for the post. Amazingly enough, there's a very recognizable 14 year old who is in need of a hair cut wearing a green T-Shirt with a Pentax camera over his left shoulder. That's me!

Axy - All grown up, dispatching trains now. Who'd a thunk it?

And of course you notice what's lurking in the background in the first two, and evidence of her existence in the fourth?

Notice these photos show UP E9A #951 previous to her 1994 restoration as an "E38-2"-- I don't think she was even operational at this time, having been retired in the early '80s due to failure of one or both of her original 12-567 engines. I believe she was towed out to LA just for this appearance. Note the rather tacky red and blue MU connectors cluttering up the nose, and the nose door and handrails, which I wish were still there today. In fact, #6051 is probably the only operable diesel in these pictures at this time.

IIRC, the UP #951 was working hard behind the #8444 during the run over Cajon Pass in May 1989. I'll have to get my video out for a look.

Thanks Steamjocky. I was quite certain all the smoke wasn't from the FEF!

When the festivities were over, the SP 6051 headed back north, lite. I was off that day, and found out that an engineer friend / co-worker was working to Bakersfield. I called the DS and got a rough time for it to be at Denis, Ca (Palmdale,CA). I then was out doing errands, with my pac-set, and got in position. I got a shot of Norman Schickendanz as he went 'putting' by. I gave him a 11x14 and framed it. He has that photo on his wall at home, in Anaheim, CA. He has been retired now, for about a year.

John:

That was it, I caught him a few hours later, seems IIRC, about 1:30 - 2pm at Denis! As he came into sight out of Palmdale, I called him and told him to "slow down a bit, and wave"... he got a kick out of that shot! I remember that, watching the 6051 running single, looked strange... but nice to see the Daylight colors at Denis!

Your collection is fantistic, I'm waiting for the next 3 or 4 thousand SP photo postings!
