Lyndon Johnson, Viet Nam, the draft, and even the Southern Pacific seemed a world away as, on this warm June morning of 1967, Rio Grande K-36 #483 simmered outside the Durango Roundhouse. This day, the locomotive is scheduled to head down the Farmington Branch with pipe and drilling mud which came over Cumbres Pass the day before. The roundhouse itself had once been shared with the Rio Grande Southern and was still active not only with freight power but also servicing power for the "Silverton".

In later years, under Bradshaw ownership, the roundhouse burned to the ground but none of the locomotives were lost.

Great shot, and thanks for sharing. I was there a little more than a year later. Boy, Durango is so hugely different today.

I hope 483 is returned to life, though it will be some years at the earliest.

Still stuck on Lyndon Johnson, Viet Nam, and the draft, are we?

Geez, why can't you come up with some new material for goodness sakes?

For example, how about: The Summer of Love, The Beatles, Apollo 1 Tragedy, 25th Amendment ratified, Six Day War, Evis Presley Marries, RMS Queen Mary's Last Transatlantic Voyage, the Torrey Canyon accident.

See how easy it is?

Oh yeah the Queen Marry and a drug addict getting married are real life changing events. I was thinking about what was on my mind when I shot that and it sure as hell wasn't the summer of love.
