Diesels, sure - but has steam identity been swapped?
Author: Mgoldman

Just browsing through the web taking note of several restored E's and F's and started
wondering if any steam engines have ever been restored into a livery that was not part
of it's heritage? E's and F's and quite a few other diesels are often restored to
liveries other then the heritage of the engine due to location and preferences - has
this ever been done with steam? I'm not referring to engines such as at New Hope, the
Grande Canyon or even UP where the changes have been number boards or backdating or
new tourist names but rather changes from one fallen flag to another that was not part
of it's heritage.

None come to my mind....
other then perhaps SP 4449 as BNSF 4449.

UP #3985 was renumbered as a Clinchfield Challenger (676?) in the 90's
NKP #765 as C&O #2765
Milwaukee Road #261 as Lackawanna #1661

I'll keep thinking!!

How about C&O 2716, when the Southern was operating it? I think I have the right number.

Also, keep in mind that C&O 614 was renumbered 611 for the last part of its active career (and beyond).

Don't forget that T&P 2-10-4 #610 wore full Southern dress while running with the steam program.

Royal Hudson 2839 was lettered Southern, too. Then there were the CPR Pacific and RDG 4-8-4 (2102, "D&H 302") that were lettered Delaware & Hudson for the D&H 150th anniversary. How could we forget "Chessie System" 2101? The NYC Mohawk (3001?) that's at Elkhart was displayed for years in Texas as a very faux T&P engine. And LS&I 34 is made up as Western Maryland 734 on the Western Maryland Scenic. Didn't one of the two exisiting Mudhens get Rio Grande Southern lettering at some point?

in 2005...the Durango and Silverton dressed it's K-28, #478 into "D&SNG #472" for a locomotive that was scrapped long before the D&SNG was a seperate compnay...IIRC even all the movements were conducted under this number...but I could be mistaken...
