Is Santa Fe 3759 still on display in Kingman?

Yes it is. The town loves that engine and is very protective of it. My uncle lives there. I spent my summers growing up crawling on every inch of it.

They moved it forward a long time ago and put a caboose behind it. I saw it last summer. The caboose could use some paint, but the engine looks good.

Didn't I read somewhere that the grand Canyon people approached the city of Kingman asking about using 3759? What I recall is that the town had no interest in letting go of the big Northern.

This is the one, by the way, that Santa Fe used for a couple of "Farewell to Steam" excursions out of LA in the 50's. My father had an album (remember those?) that had sound recordings from one of those trips. The on-board recording of her topping 100MPH east of Cajon is one of my favorite sound clips of all time. at 80 you can still discern the individual exhaust strokes (barely), at 100....there's nothing but a roar.

Humm, gonna have to dig that record out and play it again.

Ah, yes. Mobile Fidelity I think. Crank up the cut of the climb uphill from Pasadena and the cut of climbing Cajon. Your neighbors will love it.

Why did Kingman, AZ plaster their name all over it? Were they afraid someone would swipe it?

If you turn it over maybe you'll find the Mayor's Soc. Sec. number engraved...
(I think it's a Broadway Ltd.... it's that dark gray instead of black.)

Here's the view of 3759 taken from the Pony Express while 3751 was stopped while on its way to the Grand Canyon in August of 2002

Looks like the trees have grown since my post card was made in the '50's. In fact, the trees weren't there then unless they were behind the photographer.

The Video Rails VHS tape "Santa Fe 3759 - Final Run over Cajon Pass" uses some of the audio from the LP as background sound. Presumably the DVD version produced by Pentrex does too. I'm not aware that the full audio recording has ever been made available in a format other than LP. It wasn't a Mobile Fidelity record, but one produced by an outfit called High Fidelity Recordings. Unfortunately, the producers added tons of fake reverb (all the better to show off your snazzy new HiFi system), and the result makes it sound like 3759 made its last run inside a giant metal drum. A few clips from the LP can be found at the following site:

http://www.polyweb.com/dans_rr/sounds/index.html

Whoever sampled the LP also included a few clips of the SP 4-8-4 sounds that were used to fill out the record. The ones on the site feature the Leslie A-200-156 airhorn rather than the steam whistle.

Here's a shot I took of the 3759 in about 1961 with my Father's old 4X5 Speed Graphic. My son used it as a lead in shot to the video of 3751 double heading with GCR #4960 at Willaha which ended our Gorgerail Santa Fe program. Also have two copies of that album recorded by Seymore Johnson. (who lived in Montecito and gave a home on his property to the Goleta Valley Live Steamers)........... C.C.Chas.

Funny you should say that...That's just what my father used to do when he got angry with the neighbors for being too loud.

As mentioned below, that record had the 3759's trip and on the back side has some nice clips of SP GS's, one of an AC and the final clip is of F's.
