In fact even lineups would show things like "Extra West Eng unknown dp XXXX at _____". It seems there was reason to post the engine number on a train order in addition to extras--another validation that you were seeing the right train in a meet or second section etc.
One time as a very young railfan I informed a tower operator that the engine number the dispatcher had reported him for the trainorder was wrong. (Someone had taken a "7" as "1".) I knew the loco types and instantly knew they had the wrong number. After the train had passed the operator reported it to the dispatcher for some brownie points. LOL |
