SP Boxcar Question
Author: DynamicBrake

Back in the 70's, you would see an SP double door boxcar with one of the doors (usually the left one) painted yellow. Was there a specific reason for this? Someone once told me that the yellow door designated that car for carrying food products only.

Thanks....that does make sense since I used to see a lot of those cars on the Cascade Line in Oregon.

I remember 40-footers with not an "X", but one diagonal line on the doors. They were used for lumber, plywood, or other such loads, but the line was basically to show that the car had been rebuilt with wider door openings (10 feet instead of six?).
