Does anyone know if any of these ex L&N units were some of the power that L&N got from the L&NE? I recall reading that the L&NE's RS-2's mostly went to the L&N, but don't remember what became of their FA units.

None of the FA's/FB's that L&N picked up from the L&NE were in the batch that ended up on the LIRR, having been previously retired and traded in.

I remember that locomotive well. It was actually acquired by the Portola Railroad Museum (now the Western Pacific Railroad Museum) and the intent was to paint it into UP colors. It was at the center of much discussion (along with a set of ex-VIA FPA and FPB that went to Grand Canyon) as to why a Western Pacific museum had those engines. There was some talk of painting it into SP&S colors, but then IRM wanted it, so it went to its new home.

Nice!

My memory of the LIRR is the same cluttered existence, even with the new lipstick containers.

Is that last photo a flyover that train is running on?

Yes. The 2 portals you see are the Atlantic Branch tracks heading east to Valley Stream. Except for the buildings on the left and the train, that picture could have been taken today.
