Nostalgia & History > Only KCS steam locomotive in Kansas

There is only one Kansas City Southern steam locomotive in existence in Kansas. Attached are pictures of one that sits in a park on the east side of downtown Pittsburg, KS.

Can anyone tell me how many KCS steam locomotives survived the scrapper's torch more than 50 years ago? If there is only a handful around, what are their locations?

By the way, these pictures were taken in Pittsburg on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009.

I believe that is the only extant KCS steam locomotive. There is also an ex-KCS tender (from a 2-8-8-0 IIRC)that belonged to IRM and was stored in Galt, IL.

Too bad one of the "Malleys" wasn't saved.

Yes, it appears that this is the only one.

Amazing how many well-known Class 1s have only 1 or even 0 surviving steam locomotives.

Ones I can think of:

zero survivors
Chicago Great Western
Lehigh and Hudson River

one survivor
Denver and Rio Grande Western (standard gauge)
Kansas City Southern
Detroit Toledo and Ironton
Deleware and Hudson
Gulf Mobile and Ohio
Soo (I goofed. There are more than 1.)

I thought there were at least 3 SOO steam engines left?

There are 4 Soo engines in just North Dakota and I know of others elsewhere.
