Being from Portland and having chased down most of the old streetcar and interurban grades in the area, I believe photo #2 is at S.E. 82nd Ave., not 92nd. It is westbound, headed towards Portland. I could be wrong, but that grade crossing is all to familiar. Thanx....Pat

Interesting set of photos,Ken. I especially enjoyed the in-service shot of the 4017, formerly Pacific Electric 5099. For a view of her on a flatcar at Torrance Shops prior to leaving California for Oregon, see:http://www.flickr.com/photos/metrolibraryarchive/3507444481/sizes/o/in/photostream/

Cheers,
Jack

Also, somewhere not too long ago was posted a photo of ex-Key System 987 still in NCL colors going to Portland on lease, also sitting on a flatcar in 1948. I believe it ran in Portland until 1958. Had been donated to BAERA after Key abandoned streetcar service, who then leased it to Portland. I forgot what number they assigned to it; 4___.

Photo #2 is of an eastbound going away from Portland, because of the way the sun is shining and the fact that the ROW was on the north side of the electric towers. It's a tossup between 82nd and 92nd, couldn't tell ya. 82nd was much more developed back in the day than 92nd, but I could be wrong. Towers are constructed and aligned the same at both places... Am leaning towards 92nd, but it very well could be 82nd.

Thanks for posting these KRK!

A great big "YES" to your question...

Photo 1. PR&T # 1403 & 1408 with 18-car train, North of Oaks Park, OR on 11-5-49.

Photo 2. PR&T # 1412 East Water Street Yards 6-20-53

Photo 3. PEPCO # 1408 at "Golf Junction" 9-26-42

How did I do, Sir ??

Photo #2 is definately 92nd street for the following reasons in additiion to those Chris noted (1) 82nd Street was 4 lane during this era; (2) If it were 82nd St (Kendall Station) looking west there would be a siding switch under the rear of the car for the siding that went to the right and via another switch and spur served an oil dealer and (3) if it were 82nd st looking east there would have been the Kendall Station Tavern and the spur into the machinery dealer on the left.

All of the forementioned spurs and sidings were in place at Kendall when the picture was taken and were still there when I salvaged the Boring line in 1989. 92nd Street without question!!

Dick:

In the last picture you can see the tracks in the pavement in the foreground that connect with the Oregon City line. Were you the one who "rediscovered" these when you cleared out the blackberries when you began use of the remnants of the spur there at Golf Jct?

Also, can you help place the streets around the first photo that has the Lakewood label? It indicates it's the Oregon City line but I can't place the vicinity

KRK:

Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I found the tracks which a portion of which were "protected" and made a part of the display by the Garthwick residents. Unearthing the tracks was a joint discovery by myself and PGE crews setting a new pole who tried to drill a pole hole on top of one of the rails!

I don't see how the photo labeled "Lakewood" can be correct. If the view was from Hwy 99 there would be a steep hillside in the background, no house visible and the tracks curved. If it were from the other direction, the nearly-new hwy 99 E would be in the background.

I believe the photo was taken just south of Golf Junction where the double-tracked Oregon City line entered what is now the Waverly Golf Course.

I need to walk down there some time and see if that house or a remodeled portion of it is still visible.

Dick Samuels
