I had no idea that the GP9s were used so much in intercity passenger service. I only witnessed a GP9 used once on a scheduled train, 3008 on Train 102 on May 9-10, 1969, but I wrote that off because so many of SP's passenger Fs were taken up with the special trains surrounding the Centennial.

Another example of the "Deadhead Daylight" -- there are what looks like an ex- "Sunset" baggage-dorm and an ex-CNW chair car ahead of the baggage and mail on the lower shot of #51.

Very cool!

I would expect its indicating first section of #3.

Check out the UP style snow shields on the 2nd E unit on 1-3. SP tried once and didn't repeat.

Yes, indeed

Neat! Perhaps photo 3, First No. 3, was due to the normally combined Golden State-Sunset between El Paso and LA being run in two sections on account of the huge increase in traffic caused by the airline strike that summer. Or...? Anywho, these nicely convey the down-at-the-hells, almost gritty quality of SP's latter-day passenger service. The glory days were definitely over! Thanks for sharing, Kurt.

I did not get to experience most of the SP passenger trains. Many thanks for the history lesson.

Enjoyed the pictures very much. Thanks for sharing.

I always felt that geeps belonged on the commutes, not intercity trains. Whenever I saw the Daylight or Lark go through with a geep on the point, it was a big letdown.
