SD&AE a few years ago
Author: PERichardson

1. SP SW8s 11-25-26 in the yard in San Diego 3/6/74 Amazing how big those gas storage tanks were

2. Chrome Crankshaft Alco RS32 #4004 (s-SP), San Diego 3/15/80. The skyline looks a bit different 30 years later.

Thank you very much for posting these. The 4004 is now at Campo Ca back on the railroad... too bad she don't look that good now.

Great photos, brings back lots of memories, got cab rides in both of the SWs. Kyle bought the 6 SW8s from MTDB, these came with the purchase of the line from SP. The 1110 was scrapped by Kyle, and the remaining 5 were loaded onto heavy flatcars for the move to the Kyle RR in Colorado/Kansas.
The 4004 in the second photo, along with the silver tank car(NWP MW 849) visible over the Mopac boxcar behind the 4004 are both now part of the PSRM collection at Campo, Ca.
I worked for the company that moved the turntable(out of the photo behind the engine house and storage shed, and to the left of the NWP tank car) and tore down the enginehouse to make room for the expansion of the SD Trolley facility in 1990. The original Trolley shop will be built to the upper right of the second photo.

Neat to see the 4004 on SD&AE rails. I played a part it getting her into the collection at Campo. Glad to see she's loved down there.

Just can hardly wait to have the time, money and manpower to get her running! Too bad our Alco expert had to take a job on the east coast!

Someday!

That's been QUITE a few years ago.
I remember that scene, long before San Diego became too crowded and complicated and there was a ferry boat instead of that eyesore of a bridge.
I remember wandering around the SD&AE engine shed and not a soul bothered me,ever.
Thanks for the memories.

I went to school in Encanto- I'd get to at least hear if not see those SW8s everyday. They were the first seed planted into what grew my railfan hobby.
Sometime's if I was lucky they'd come by when I was on the way home.
Thanks for posting these!
