They came to Oregon in a MUG, but > this job just peddles them up the line "XMUG" was a contraction for "Empties for Eugene" and originated in San Antonio. They were to be approximately 150 cars in length and operated in a block with 1000 mile inspections at Los Angeles and Roseville. In 1958 the CTC sidings between Anapra and Dunsmuir were to be constructed from switch point to switch point at 9000 ft lengths to handle these trains with out having to interrupt their length. This is why the "Rock Pile" tracks in Roseville were constructed at 10000 ft lengths so the trains would not have to be doubled over but could be inspected and sent north. The three "Rock Pile" tracks are the only three remaining tracks in the old Antelope yard from the SP days. Dunsmuir Yard was still in operation in those days and with the run through and closing of Gerber the empties were switched and distributed at Dunsmuir to the Siskiyou and Eugene. When the flow of the empties in the MUG trains was interrupted even for a short time it would seriously effect the NW lumber move. Still it was not as serious as the "Spotted Owl". After Feb, 3, 1974 when symbols were changed to alpha characters, MUG trains received the letter "E" for empties".. i.e. WCEUE, LAEUE, SAEUE Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/28/11 13:23 by WAF. |
