to the Canyon in '68
Author: bakersfielddave

i found this timetable in my collection this week

what would have been the last schedule issued for passenger service from Williams to the GC ?

and what sort of train would this have been a Geep with a few cars and combine or cars off the main East-West-East trains?

Interesting, I didn't think there were scheduled trains to the Rim that late. I remember going
there in 1965 and seeing only the water cars and no trains. Bus schedule???

That seems like an odd schedule. The train leaves Grand Canyon in the morning, runs to Williams, and returns. What happens to the power the rest of the day? Does the crew start with an early light hop from Williams to Grand Canyon and end with a light run home to Williams in the late afternoon, or does the power lay over at Grand Canyon??

it appears they were based at Grand Canyon

seems strange ,but a top crew seniority run maybe?

July 1968 saw the last train. This train consisted of a baggage and chair car during this last season, neither of which were interchanged. Ususal power was a GP9, but F7A and B unit power also was used. Same for the Phoenix train at this time. The 1967 season saw the last Pullman service to the Canyon which were interchanged with main line trains. Except for group moves, I don't recall regular chair car interchanges with mainline trains.

Power laid over in GC, along with the consist. Maybe the crew drove up. Anyway, this was a short lived schedule, starting on Memorial day, and ending in July, when permission to discontinue was received. In later years, this was always a seasonal schedule.

Ah, an explanation. When we were at the Canyon in 65 it was a
couple weeks before Memorial Day trying to miss the crowds. Too
bad I guess, missed the train too. Again, it looked pretty
sleepy with but the water cars and no other signs of rail life.
