Nostalgia & History > Another year (1981), another vacation! Part 1Date: 05/16/11 11:45 Another year (1981), another vacation! Part 1 Author: SP6190 In September 1981, I made a trip back to Kansas, so my future wife could "Meet the Parents". I broke her in early regarding my affliction for steel wheels on steel rails, so it wasn't surprising that the trip would also involved being near a railroad most of the time. The first night out was spent in Williams Arizona. We got there early enough for me to do a bit of train watching before calling it a day.
September 26, 1981 #1-3 Heading out from the motel, I found a road just north of town which ran along the tracks and waited. Of course the trains were all eastbound, so the lighting could have been a bit better. The Santa Fe 5038 was first, and was followed shortly by the 3829. Date: 05/16/11 11:46 Re: Another year (1981), another vacation! Part 1 Author: SP6190 #4 I waited for one more eastbound at this location, the 3215, then decided to see what else I could find.
#5 Just as I reached the main road into town, I head another eastbound coming and decided to wait. Here we see the 5605 about to cross the highway. Date: 05/16/11 11:47 Re: Another year (1981), another vacation! Part 1 Author: SP6190 #6-7 I didn't have to wait long for another train after changing locations. It's another eastbound or course. Santa Fe 8052, comes under the I40 bridge construction and meets the 5514. Finally a westbound.
#8 One more train for the day before I head back to the motel, collect the future wife, and get something to eat. Santa Fe 8773 is WESTBOUND in the best light of the day. Date: 05/16/11 11:48 Re: Another year (1981), another vacation! Part 1 Author: SP6190 September 27. 1981
#9 The next morning we headed up to the Grand Canyon for awhile, then headed east for Durango. I must admit I wasn't expecting to see a train along the way, having forgotten about the BL&LP. But to my surprise we caught two. The first one, BM&LP 6005 was west of the Kayenta mine load-out near Arizona Hwy 98, heading for Page. #10 The second train with the 6006 leading was at the load-out which is between Hwy 98 and 564 on US 160.
