I have a fondness for the Palace Hotel in Salida. My Dad in his diary describes a trip to Salida on Sunday, February 29th, 1920, to have an examination of his stomach at the Denver and Rio Grande [Western] Railroad Hospital. The results were that his stomach was ok.

The following excerpts are from the pages of my Dad’s diary.

Monday, March 1st, 1920 [Diary page 257.] A good night of rest in a new bed – Palace Hotel.

Thursday, March 4th, 1920 [Diary page 260.] Called upstairs at 11 am to swallow the “garden hose” – some joke.

Friday, March 5th, 1920 [Diary page 261.] After breakfast went down to the depot to see the “Little Train” arrive. “Some sight.” [The little train was most likely the narrow gauge train from perhaps Gunnison.]

In 1920, 1st class passenger train 316 from Gunnison arrived Salida at 9:30pm.

1st class passenger train 318 from Alamosa arrived at 12:05pm.

3rd class freight 328 from Gunnison is shown arriving 6:00pm.

3rd class freight 323 from Alamosa is shown arriving 9:40am after an overnight trip. This appears to be the most likely candidate.
