Another year (1983), and another vacation to?

Kansas of course. This time just for a little variety we headed north on I-15 to Ogden Utah before turning right and heading east on I-80 through Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and Neeeebrassska, before dropping into Kansas near Phillipsburg and heading for my parents place in Marquette.

The big day? June 18, 1983. LA to Provo.

#1 The first shot of the day/trip was the Santa Fe 5996 leading a pig train through Daggett.

#2 The last shot of the day was a shot of three Rio Grande GP9's including the 5931 and 5942 at the Provo Utah fueling facilities.

So much for day one.

Day two dawned mostly cloudy, something we will see a lot in the first days of the trip. Well, do what you can and hope for the best in the picture department. The date is June 19, 1983.

#3 In Ogdon we ran across a scrap yard with a couple of Wilson Car Lines refers, in numerical order no less.

#4 The UP 3212 leads a train into town from the Pacific Northwest.

#5 Heading east, it wasn't long before we met the UP 3320 with a westbound Rio Grande detour train. The Rio Grande was having a small problem with a little dirt and water at Thistle UT at the time.

#6 A bit farther on, we found a spot near Echo to catch Amtrak #6. UP 9003 is leading this day.

#7-8 Not much at Green River. Just a couple of MK Sulzer SD45 rebuilds, and a few SD40-2's and a U30C all waiting for something to do.

#9-10 Somewhere near Wamsutter we caught #5 with the UP 9000 leading.

#11-12 Not long after #5 passed, a eastbound potash train with the 3290 leading.

#13-15 Two more trains, both Rio Grande detour trains were next. The 3165 leads the eastbound, and 3737 the eastbound.

#16 Just outside of Rawlins we caught the 3201 heading west.

#17 USAF 1237 on DODX 38434.

#18 Nevada Northern 100 in white with a builders date of 9-82 was a little unusual. It was in the middle of about 10 more NN gondolas in the 500 series, all in black.

#19 The 2507 was next in line.

#20 The final train for the day was the 3687 on a short pig train. The rain started just after that, so it was time to finally get something to eat.

Nice series of pictures, always enjoy traveling along with you on your vacation journeys through your photos! I posted a shot of Sulzer SD45 #61 awhile back that had the table-top antennae on the roof of the cab, I thought all of the Sulzer equipped SD45's were remote units? Again, Thanks for sharing!

Nice variety. One of those excellent vacations when you never knew what you would see around the next bend. Those were the days.

Nice billboards on all those UP locomotives.

I wish TO had a way to upload these photos in full resolution for study and archiving. I'm sure there's much more to see at full resolution.

I never new the Rio Grande fuel racks used to be on the north side of the tracks in Provo. By the early 90s when I was poking around the yards everything was consolidated at the Utah Railway fueling racks in the middle of all the yards.

Thanks for sharing.
