Western Where Is It?

It's October 1989 and I'm standing in the middle of an abandoned ROW. The picture is looking "down" that ROW. The track running left-right through the picture is active. Whose abandoned ROW, and whose active track is this?

That's in New Mexico. The active line is the Santa Fe's Raton Pass line, and the abandoned line was eventually relaid as the York Canyon Branch (which originally ran SE to Santa Rosa as an SP subsidiary).

Abandoned line: Espee's South Line (former EP&SW) near Playas, NM on the Hachita Subdivision looking west with the Chiricahuas in the background.

Active line: Phelps-Dodge's line from Separ, NM to Hildago,NM

BCHellman's got it exactly right! We were chasing the Phelps-Dodge GP38-2's that day nearly 22 years ago.

I seem to recall the Hildago operation was a smelter, so I would imagine the cars would be empty sulphuric acid tanks going for a load.

I also believe the PD line is gone too.
