I don't know a lot about the Q but that looks a lot like eastern Colorado to me.

This predated the Keokuk days so I am guessing it is not in that part of Iowa or downtown Chicago.

I'm going to guess the Lafayette Line between Broomfield and Longmont via Erie.

you know you've always been Mr. Detail, quite an observation, but if you look closely you might see the top of the Sears Tower (or is it now called something else??)

Man have times have changed! Line is still in use but somethings have changed. Thanks for the picture! Post more of any CB&Q or C&S stuff from around here if you have any more :-)

yes line still in use to there and cement plant still has it's GE45T which I shot the same day as this shot. I posted a whereizt on 3/25/11 showing the end of that line at Bohn Park, in Lyons, and yes, I have plenty more from around here, been shooting here since 1968

But the details are the clues. I could have said it is just off the bridge and not to the switch and left it there. You can't tell me that is wrong, Gramps.

Keep em coming, I might get one right yet.

I'll throw in the barn photo and ask which railroad station is this located at? You have driven by it a time or two I am sure....

Ah Ha! I caught you reading the photo caption again! Who knows if the barn is in Happy Hollow but the name of the ranch is the Happy Hollow Ranch. The town name is something else, though. Though the barn is not trackside the tracks are just over the highway. Hmmm, which highway and which tracks?

As I recall, they called that job "the Buck Local" - is that correct?

'saw that job many times in the mid/late '70s. The power would sit in Lyons mid-day while the crew had lunch.

In the BN era mid-70s, power was often a mix of x-Q GP20s / x-GN & x-Q U25Bs, many still in pre-merger paint. The other job that regularly worked that line was a unit train that loaded with sand at the over-the-track silos just east of town - I don't recall its name. It normally ran with sets of 3 SD9s, if I remember correctly. I really liked that little branch...

Take care,

Mark

The Buck (Buckwheat) still runs and when it gets to Broomfield from Longmont it heads back north on the now severed CB&Q branch as far as Lafayette to an industry there. The rest of that branch from Lafayette to Longmont is gone.

The unit train that I remember, and photographed, was what we called the 'rock train' and it ran from Western Paving's quarrying operation near Lyons to the Western Paving facility in north Denver. The cars were painted and lettered for Western Paving, and SD9's were the usual power. I posted a shot of this train on 5/4/10.
