Nostalgia & History > Was This A Mistake?Date: 09/01/11 10:20 Was This A Mistake? Author: jmw Here is a 1958 Portland Cement ad featuring one of the Santa Fe's bridges near the Air Force Academy up in Colorado.
I imagine this is Joint Line territory being shared at that time by the Santa Fe and the Rio Grande. I was a bit surprised that the ad states "Santa Fe bridges use..." and then go and use a photo of DRGW locomotive. There is no mention in the ad about the Rio Grande. More RR ads here: http://waidephoto.smugmug.com/Trains/Vintage-Railroad/14655704_xRs6bD#P-1-20 "New" ads posted today from 1892, 1931, and 1958. In the last ten months the collection has grown from 100 ads to 3,670. Been busy! Enjoy. JMW Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/01/11 10:21 by jmw. Date: 09/01/11 11:27 Re: Was This A Mistake? Most people would not identify them as Rio Grande locomotives.

Simple, its not a Rio Grande bridge...Santa Fe built it, Santa Fe decided to use the new technology...it doesn't matter whose train uses the track, but that Santa Fe (one of the industry leaders in new technology at the time) chose THEIR bridge for their latest project. Just sayin, they make a big deal about Santa Fe using their materials then use a photo featuring another railroad. Common sense would make one think it would be best to use a Santa Fe locomotive. Just struck me as unusual. Shucks. JMW Date: 09/02/11 21:06 Re: Was This A Mistake? Author: gobbl3gook No, they just used the Rio Grande train because it had a better paint scheme on its PAs.
;^) Ted in OR Date: 09/04/11 17:47 Re: Was This A Mistake? Author: bnsfsd70 Another issue with the legibility of the Rio Grande lettering is that they flipped the image for the ad. I was looking at the version posted above, and I didn't seem to recall "Rio" being a longer word than "Grande." That being said, I flipped the image, and it seemed to make a little more sense.
