At that time, SP was still using the number boxes to display the train number rather than the engine number (which was painted on between the headlights). The boxes had slots into which individual numerals were slid to display the train number, and units like these that were sitting in a terminal not assigned to a train would have nothing displayed. Except for the peninsula commutes, SP discontinued the practice of displaying the train number in 1967, so photos 2 and 3 taken after that date show units with the engine number displayed in the number boxes.
