Nostalgia & History > Rock Island locomotive No. 1896 in 1933Date: 01/01/12 19:17 Rock Island locomotive No. 1896 in 1933 Author: JoCoLB Here's a photo of Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad steam locomotive No. 1896 next to the roundhouse in Herington, KS, on June 28, 1933. This engine probably worked on many segments of the Rock Island system. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone has any other pictures of this engine while it was operating over the road somewhere.

This loco was one of the "Mother Hubbards" <aka camelbacks> that came from the CO&G. The 1896 lasted until 12/1942 and it was ex CO&G 158, nee CO&G 113. If I can remember correctly, the MH were rebuilt with the cab on the back of the boiler about 1909-1910.
If you want to know more of this class, read the "Rock Island Steam Power" by W. Wesley Krambeck, W.D. Edson and J.W. Farrell. wag216 Date: 01/02/12 17:44 Re: Rock Island locomotive No. 1896 in 1933 Author: JoCoLB Mr. Krambeck worked for the Rock Island in Herington in the early part of his career before transferring to Kansas City, Kan. I got to meet Mr. Krambeck in the mid-1980s. About the same time, The Kansas City Star featured him in a photo one summer, showing him mowing his small yard with an old-fashioned reel-type push mower. It was a memorable photo for this guy.
