'salad' scheme? At least that's what someone told me long ago that they used to call this paint scheme, anyone else ever heard it called that?

Thanks, I've just finished reading a history of the DSSA, great to see colour pictures of their Baldwins.

What's that critter on the bottom of the last photo?

Rick: good question ... but I have no idea, it's on the original that I scanned, just a black mark .... but if this were a shot of a U-boat I'd say it was an oil slick

As in a mix of banana, grape and strawberries. Nice on a hot summer day I am sure.

I guess if you insist on vegetables it could be lettuce, radish and sweet garden peppers, maybe spicier peppercini.

This is the original DSS&A scheme, but the photos were taken in 1963, 2 years after the merger with the Soo Line, so the DSS&A lettering had been replace with "Soo Line". As time went by, at least one centercab made it into the Light Gray/Red Soo Line scheme and one centercab got the economy Soo maroon dip scheme. It was known jokingly as the "Chocolate Soldier" (main character in a George Bernard Shaw 1894 book and later 1908 Straus operetta).

There are excellent photos in the Morning Sun "Soo Line in Color" book and probably elsewhere.

A more widespread "salad" color scheme was the National City Lines "fruit salad" paint job, applied mostly to buses, but also used on Key System and LA Transit Lines electric cars.

Here are a couple of my photos of both of the Soo Line schemes, taken in 1968 with a Kodak box camera on the ramp leading to the Marquette, MI ore dock (faintly visible in the background).
