mFile: another Clodfelter Southern scene
Author: valmont

This Frank Clodfelter shot is dated 11/71, location not known, but after the responses to the last one of these I posted, in a similar setting, I expect this location will also be identified soon.

Does anyone know if the dome car roof was green like the car sides or black? I want to model it but I have never been able to determine the color. It just looks weathered in the photo. Thanks in advance!

don't know if this helps, pixels break down with this zoom, but the roof appears to be a different color

Was this picture printed in TRAINS several years ago when they
did a piece on the Asheville train? I seem to recall that.

Looks like the Ashville to Salsbury train.

Good memory! It looked familiar to me too. A vertical-format version of the photo with much more track in the foreground is on pages 34-35 of the October 1974 issue with the following caption: "Train 4 descends from Ridgecrest to Old Fort, N.C. in October 19__. Pisgah National Forest provides the background for the dome train." Unfortunately, the last two digits in the year got cropped in the digital version, but presumably it's 1971 (hopefully somebody has the cellulose-based version and can get us the year). The article it accompanies isn't about the Asheville train specifically, but is a Don Phillips piece on Southern and its decision to stay out of Amtrak. It's possible TRAINS has used the photo more than once, but that's the only instance I'm finding.

I have the original slide, it has Kodak embossed stamp on it that says 'NOV 71 A6', also on the slide, rubber stamped in red ink it says:

W. Frank Clodfelter
36 Westchester Drive
Asheville, N.C. 28803

Nice shot. Thanks for posting it.

With the mountain in the background, I'd agree it's Train 4, the eastbound Asheville (Biltmore)-Salisbury train, but I'll leave it to those more familiar with specific locations on the mountainside to identify precisely where it is between Ridgecrest (top of the mountain) and Old Fort (bottom).
