long gone F-unit short line scene: WA&G
Author: valmont

This December 1977 picture, taken by Paul Templeton @ Galeton, PA, is a peaceful look at the past. Does the building still stand?

The former B&S office building was still standing at last report. The building is reportedly owned by Randy Ferguson, the son of the former WAG General Manager Leonard Ferguson. I am told the building has been badly damaged internally by a leaking roof. It has been vacant for quite sometime.

If I remember correctly, WA&G's ex-SP F units went to Pittsburgh's PATrain, and then to CDOT. Did any survive after that?

Wellsville, Addison and Galeton WAG 2000 and 2100 (ex-SP 6378 and 6380); to Louisiana and North West LNW 45 and 46, to Golden
Gate Railroad Museum, stored unrestored at Niles Canyon.

WAG 2200 and 2300 (ex-SP 6443 and 365); then PATrain 6690 and 6691 (rebuilt by General Electric 1981), then CDOT 6690 and 6691,
now at the Galveston Railroad Museum and repainted into fresh but incorrect Santa Fe warbonnet scheme (they were never Santa
Fe engines and the stencils used for the warbonnet nose emblem were inaccurate), operating on their excursion train.

WAG 2400 (ex-SP 379); to LNW 48, then Waccamaw Coast Line 48, then Carolina Southern 48. According to Joe Strapac, moved to
Chadburne, NC; derelict by April 2002.

WAG 2500 but never so numbered (ex-SP 6309); to LNW 47, to Texas Limited 200, to the Galveston museum, flooded during Hurricane
Ike and scrapped at the museum June 2011.

Additional, non-WAG engine: SP 6379; to L&NW 44, to Texas Limited 100 to the Galveston museum, flooded during Hurricane
Ike and scrapped at the museum June 2011.

As usual, any corrections as to provenance of equipment is welcome. Better to have the correct information out there for future
researchers.

Very cool photo.

Let's not forget their two ex-WP engines.

The WAG acquired WP F7B 921-C and FP7 805-A. The 921-C was only a parts source and was scrapped in late 1989 or early 1990.

The WAG ran 805-A unrenumbered, then sold / transferred her in August 1976 to the Louisiana and North Western as their 49. She ran there for 11 years until being purchased by the Feather River Rail Society at Portola, CA. She was since been restored to operational condition and given her classic California Zephyr appearance. She is the sole surviving passenger diesel from the WP and one of the few surviving diesels built specifically for the CZ.

Attached is a photo of how she looked a few years ago on a trip to Sparks, NV for the museum. Today, she again sports the small Zephyr Gothic road name. Photo by Mike Mucklin.

This one still shows up in the Feb 2008 Google Streetview image:

The F on the right appears to be it, based on the position of paint patches relative to these 1997, 2006, and 2007 shots:

Wonder if it's still there.

I wonder about Paul, the photographer of the image. He and I both used to run trains out of Sterling. He has posted stuff running by his house near the GWR, but haven't heard from him lately. Great guy. Hope he is doing okay... === === = === JLH
