Vintage 1971 Espee work train

Boca, Calif. about halfway up the hill from Verdi to Truckee has always been a favorite railfan photo spot. On this day a Geep came slowly up the hill with some gons, a crane and a caboose, picking up or dropping stick rail. I don't remember which. Chore done, the Geep throttled up and headed for Truckee. I would guess these kinds of trains are pretty much history, replaced by hi-rail equipment.

This same scene was common place on the Tehacahpis' John. The "Mountain work train" was one of the highest seniority jobs on the sub-division.

Same in the Cascades, the C-1 work train out of Oakridge
