What's the story behind these SRR tank cars?
Author: msharps

This was captured June 18, 2011, I believe on 7th Street. Was this the old right-of-way to Angels Camp?

Oops, sorry... it was taken at Jamestown, California on 7th Street, about a block away from the Sierra Railroad facilities.

Thanks. I am not any help on that.

Always nice to find old relics though. I remember as a preteen finding a long forgotten steel framed tie or equipment trailer for some MOW equipment. It was still good with all 4 steel wheels and greased enough to roll. We had a blast riding that on the abandoned industry siding track which sloped and was away from the mainline. Never did go near the mainline with it.

Not sure about the tank cars themselves, but yes that is the ROW for the Angel's Camp Branch. It crossed 7th Street and 6th Street between 4th and 5th Avenues, running between the buildings in that block. The rails are still there as far as 6th Street.

IIRC, there are or were several cars sitting in the ROW between the buildings and 1 or 2 on the other side of 7th closer to the station. There is also the line of hoppers a little further south near the crossing of Antone Ave / Sierra Ave.

Past 6th, the branch curved west and crossed through what is now the intersection of Hwy 108 and Jamestown Road. It crossed Woods Creek near the bridge for Rawhide Road and then continued up what is now the appropriately named Railbed Road.
