Per your comment about steam in Bear River Canyon, here is the special to Spokane with the 8444. Note the "track inspectors" walking ahead. I was told this class loco
had never been on this line and tight curve. The guy upper left looks like either a MIB or John Baluchi doing a Blues Brothers dance.

I think I'll get in my "way back machine" and go back and make them all wear hard hats and "puke green" vests!

In my past, the 5091(4-10-2) was a regular on the Bear River line. wag216

What would the inspectors have been looking for?

Keith, thank you very much. Though before my time, this being the trip to the Spokane world's fair, it was about this time that we were gathering aspirations in Cheyenne to see if 3985 could be a viable option for restoration to service. And history proves us out. Currently the Challenger still remains quite in the Cheyenne shop awaiting completion of it's class overhaul. I only hope that comes to fruition one day. I believe the 844 and 3985 were the best choices for continued service at the time and still are.

Anyone notice how the bell fell off and is resting on the mars light?

That's not the first time that (the bell falling) has happened.

Same thing happened in the late 70s on a trip to Laramie(?), as I recall.

Jstnorthfoamer,

Very sharp eyes on the bell. I never noticed it. A closeup scan shows it isn't just good luck it hadn't fallen off. Carefully secured by rope.

Bet it didn't fall off. Note the missing parts.

My guess is that someone tried to steal it and found out the hard way how heavy it is.
