SP somewhere in southern calif
Author: editman

Found these pictures of a SP freight. These are from the 1965-1967 time, but I have no idea where except certain they are in Southern California.

Looks like the Saugus line to me.

They appear to have been taken somewhere in Soledad Canyon. Looks like a BF-Tehachapi power pool set. Nice look back!

Yes, Soledad Canyon. This is between Lang and the old siding location of Russ...

Why did they always have the SD-9's on the point and the new units in the center?

Yes, the line is in place and hosts Metrolink commuter and UP freights.
I had heard that the preference of the engineers led to this practice, remember SD-9s were called "Cadillacs" for a reason: they rode nice.

Not only is it still in service, you can ride a passenger train (several actually) on this line in daylight. Today this is Metrolink's Valley Subdivision or as it is commonly called "The Antelope Valley Line". It sees 20 weekday passenger trains thru the canyon (12 on Saturdays and 6 on Sundays) plus several UP freights each day. Including a unit rock train that is frequently photographed in the canyon on Sundays and posted here on Trainorders.

SD9's rode well; could also have been differences in air brake systems and dynamic brake systems with the newer power being backward compatible to the older power, but the older power not necessarily compatible to new power leading.
